Saint-Exupéry or Lyon-Bron: Which Is the Best Airport in Lyon for Private Jets?

Travelers arriving in Lyon by private jet can choose to land at Lyon-Saint Exupéry Airport or Lyon-Bron Airport. In our in-depth article on turbulence on the Milan-Lyon route by private jet , we had listed Lyon-Bron as the arrival airport for private jets. But why choose Bron when Saint-Exupéry is the city’s main airport?

The answer does not depend solely on the distance from the city center. In business aviation, other factors come into play, such as runway characteristics, operating hours, available services, the type of aircraft, and the destination to be reached after landing.

Lyon-Bron and Lyon-Saint Exupéry: Two Airports, Two Different Functions

Lyon has two airports that can be used for business aviation, but they have very different characteristics. Lyon-Bron is an airport entirely dedicated to business aviation, while Lyon-Saint Exupéry is the city’s main international airport, which also offers facilities and services specifically designed for private flights.

This difference is important for anyone planning a private jet flight. Bron was originally established as an airport specializing in business aviation and is located very close to downtown Lyon. Saint-Exupéry, on the other hand, has a much larger airport infrastructure and offers, in addition to scheduled flights, a dedicated service for private aviation passengers.

The choice of airport therefore depends on the flight details, the aircraft used, the schedule, and the destination to be reached after landing.

Lyon-Bron, the airport dedicated to business aviation

Lyon-Bron is one of France’s most important airports for business aviation and is entirely dedicated to business aviation.

Its location is one of the main advantages for travelers heading to Lyon: the airport is located about 10 kilometers from the city center, which helps minimize the ground transfer time after landing.

The airport features FBOs and facilities dedicated to private aviation passengers, as well as heated hangars and parking areas for aircraft in transit.

The runway must also be taken into account when planning a flight. Lyon-Bron has a runway that is 1,820 meters long and 45 meters wide. These dimensions are suitable for many private jets, but of course, they do not offer the same operational flexibility as the much longer runways at a major international airport.

This does not mean that Bron is reserved exclusively for smaller jets. The ability to operate a particular aircraft depends on its performance and the specific flight conditions: takeoff weight, fuel, passengers, temperature, wind, runway conditions, and operational requirements can all affect the assessment.

Another factor to consider is the operating hours. The airport normally operates from 7:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., seven days a week, with the option to request extended hours.

For a private flight to Lyon on a light or medium-sized jet, when proximity to the city center is a priority, Lyon Bron Airport can be a particularly attractive option.

Lyon-Saint Exupéry, Lyon’s major international airport

Lyon-Saint Exupéry serves a completely different purpose. It is the city’s main international airport and handles both commercial and business aviation.

Dedicated facilities and a 24-hour FBO are available for passengers traveling by private jet. The airport is also open 24 hours a day, a feature that ensures greater flexibility in flight scheduling.

The most obvious difference compared to Bron, however, concerns the airport infrastructure. Saint-Exupéry has two runways, one of which is 4,000 meters long—a length that offers much greater operational flexibility than the runway at Lyon-Bron. This can be particularly important for heavier aircraft and for flights that require specific takeoff or landing performance.

Airport services are also on par with those of a major international hub, including refueling, ground handling, and facilities capable of handling international flights at any time of day.

For this reason, Saint-Exupéry may be the best option when a flight requires greater operational flexibility, when the aircraft has special requirements, or when the departure or arrival time is not compatible with Bron’s normal operations.

Which airport should I choose: Bron or Saint-Exupéry?

The decision cannot be made simply by determining which of the two airports is “better.”

Lyon-Bron has the advantage of specializing in business aviation and being close to downtown Lyon. Lyon-Saint Exupéry, on the other hand, offers a much larger infrastructure, 24-hour operations, and a 4,000-meter runway.

The type of jet can also make a difference. A Phenom 300, a Citation CJ4, or a Praetor 500 have different operational requirements than a Gulfstream G650 or a Bombardier Global 7500.

However, it is not correct to automatically associate a specific model with one of the two airports. The feasibility and cost-effectiveness of an operation always depend on the overall flight parameters.

The assessment must therefore take into account the aircraft, route, schedule, operating conditions, and final destination. In some cases, Bron will be the most practical choice; in others, Saint-Exupéry will offer better conditions.

Lyon, a strategic gateway to the French Alps

Lyon’s location adds another factor to the planning of a private flight.

In fact, the city also serves as a gateway to the luxury destinations of the French Alps, thanks to its strategic location relative to some of the region’s major tourist resorts.

Courchevel, Méribel, Megève, Chamonix, Val d’Isère, and Tignes are among the destinations that can be reached from Lyon, either by land or, when available and convenient, by helicopter transfer.

In this case, the arrival airport becomes part of the overall itinerary. The choice of airport can be considered in conjunction with the subsequent transfer, especially when travel time to the Alpine destination is one of the passenger’s main concerns.

We took a closer look at the region’s main destinations in the article dedicated to Courchevel, Megève, Chamonix, and Val d’Isère by private jet.

Airports for Landing in the French Alps

Of course, Lyon isn’t the only possible destination for travelers heading to the French Alps. Depending on the destination and itinerary, airports closer to the mountain resorts may also be considered.

These include Chambéry, Grenoble, and Annecy, each of which has different characteristics in terms of infrastructure, lanes, operating hours, and the type of traffic they handle.

However, the fact that they are closer to the Alps does not mean they are automatically preferable to Lyon. The choice must take into account flight availability, the aircraft type, the season, and, above all, the final destination.

For Courchevel, for example, travel arrangements may include various combinations of private jets, arrival airports, and onward transfers. We’ve dedicated a specific article to how to get to Courchevel by private jet.

The helicopter transfer can be part of the itinerary, allowing you to connect an airport with good business aviation infrastructure to a mountain resort that is difficult to reach quickly by road.
