Rolex Daytona vs Zenith Chronomaster Sport: the battle is joined today on “Weekend Watches!” Tim Mosso compares and contrasts two of the most sought luxury preowned watches of our time as Rolex of Geneva vies for chronograph supremacy against Zenith watches of Le Locle. Watch collectors and watch enthusiasts will thrill to a premier slate of preowned sports watches and dress watches on YouTube’s only curated luxury watch gallery!

The Rolex Daytona is the Porsche 911 of chronographs. In fact, the 911 and the Daytona launched the very same year: 1963. Since then, Rolex’s evergreen motorsports icon has endeared itself to race car drivers, watch collectors, and fashion-conscious connoisseurs of high-style chronometry. At 40mm in stainless steel, the Rolex Daytona is a perfect match for a wide range of wrist sizes, and even female watch enthusiasts will find the famed “Cosmograph” to be an ideal fit. A Rolex Oyster bracelet and matching clasp ensure secure fit during even the most vigorous activities.

Inside its case, the Rolex 116500LN sports a manufacture caliber 4130. Automatic winding with a 72-hour power reserve, the Daytona also impresses with 100-meter water resistance. A COSC Swiss chronometer certification provides proof of Rolex’s commitment to precise timekeeping. This Rolex caliber 4130 beats beneath a white lacquered dial with white gold hands and hour indices. A black ceramic bezel caps the Cosmograph package.

The 2021 Zenith Chronomaster Sport raised eyebrows for its brash emulation of Rolex’s most famous chronograph. With a 41mm steel case, a white dial, and a black ceramic bezel, the resemblance of the Chronomaster Sport to the Daytona is uncanny. Even the bracelets and clasps are mirror images of each other. Naturally, there are differences; Zenith uses colored registers; the ceramic bezel is not a tachymeter; the date window is exclusive to the Chronomaster; the display caseback is not available on the Daytona.

But the greatest difference between Rolex and Zenith is the Zenith’s El Primero caliber 3600. Effectively an “El Primero II,” the caliber 3600 retains the original’s 36,000 vibration-per-hour beat rate and column wheel/lateral clutch architecture. Upgrades over the original El Primero include hacking seconds and an enlarged 60-hour power reserve. 100-meter water resistance ensures that the Zenith is as secure against water intrusion as its Rolex rival.
