The Rolex Daytona 116500LN variant debuted at Baselworld 2016, but it has become a phenomenon in the 2020s. Far from running its course, the now 33-year-old automatic Daytona design launched in 1988 with a Zenith El-Primero caliber before transitioning to an in-house movement in 2000. The ceramic bezel of 2016 marks the steel Daytona’s only significant visual change since the dawn of the current millennium. Watch collectors around the world agree that the Rolex Cosmograph Daytona ranks among the icons of Rolex’s catalog and among the milestone watches of the entire industry.

Today’s Rolex Daytona features a familiar 40mm stainless steel case made of Rolex’s distinctive 904L alloy. The black “Cerachrom” ceramic bezel features a tachymetre scale designed to measure the speed of race cars on a closed course. Rolex and the Daytona chronograph trace their shared association with Daytona Beach motorsports back to 1963, but the Daytona has been the official winner’s gift for all class-winning drivers since the 1990s. At the Rolex 24 Hours of Daytona endurance sports car race each January, the world’s best drivers vie equally for the podium and the promise of a Rolex watch.

Rolex’s Oyster bracelet design is well established as a design icon in its own right. The current version includes solid end links, solid center links, and a deployant clasp made of thick gauge steel. This version of the Oyster clasp includes a clamshell lock as well as a latching lock for extra security on the wrist. A 5mm “Easylink” tool-free adjustment system permits fine tuning of wrist fit on the fly.

Rolex caliber 4130 is an automatic movement with rotor winding and a 72-hour power reserve. This mechanical movement meets and exceeds the standards of the COSC Swiss chronometer evaluation to the point that Rolex guarantees accuracy to within plus or minus two seconds per 24 hours. A vertical clutch and column wheel allow precise, crisp, and seamless engagement of the chronograph functions. Caliber 4130 employs a rotor bearing, a full balance bridge, and a free-sprung balance for shock protection. The Breguet overcoil hairspring is shaped by hand and composed of a niobium-zirconium alloy that possesses immense antimagnetic qualities.
