Located just two hours outside of New York and 2 and a half hours outside of DC, Philadelphia makes for a great weekend getaway or stopover as you travel along the coast.
There are many things to love about Philadelphia and a few things you need to know before you visit.
VISIT IN SUMMER
The summer is when the city comes to life, making it the ideal time to stroll through the historic neighbourhoods and visit the many outdoor attractions. Spring is also a great time to visit because of the photogenic cherry blossom, pleasant temperatures and lower room rates. Avoid visiting on or around the 4th July, the city gets busy with festivities, so unless you are there for the fireworks and festivals, visit another time.
TAKE THE TRAIN
Philadelphia’s International airport is 20 minutes from the city centre but the easiest way to travel to Philadelphia from the nearby major cities is via train.
USE THE SEPTA
Use the SEPTA, the public transportation system in Philly to get around the city. Check the website for routes and times.
WATCH SPORTS
Philadelphia is a sports city, whilst visiting, try to catch an Eagles Football game or the Phillies baseball team.
EAT PHILLY FOOD
Don’t leave town without trying the Philly cheesesteak, a roasted pork sandwich, Philly soft pretzel or The Hoagie; a signature baguette stuffed with fresh meats.
WHERE TO STAY
Philadelphia is home to many different neighbourhoods to choose from when booking a hotel. Most visitors head towards the downtown city centre, with the historic buildings and beautiful Rittenhouse Square. For those looking for a bit of history, head to the Old City, located near Delaware River. For trendier options, visit the Fishtown area, north of downtown.
SAVE MONEY
There are a few ways that you can save money in Philadelphia. Firstly, take advantage of the free attractions such as Independence Hall and the Liberty Bell but also get yourself a Philadelphia pass to save money on ticketed attractions. You can also save money by taking advantage of the happy hours around the city. The Kimmel Center offers a series of free shows too or you can pick up same-day shows at the Walnut Street Theatre.
TAKE A WALKING TOUR
Downtown is a walkable neighbourhood, so choose one of the many sightseeing or food tours the city has to offer.
KEEP SAFE
The main tourist areas of the city are relatively safe but make sure you use common sense; keep your valuable near you at all times and avoid walking the streets at night; especially if you don’t know your way.
SPOT THE SIGNS
Pay attention to the signs. Whilst walking around the city, keep an eye out for the blue signs scattered around. These explain the significant of important landmarks and buildings around the historic city.
