When Rolex released their annual novelties at the end of August of 2020, one would have been forgiven for expecting a new generation of Oyster Perpetual to fly under the radar, especially in a year which also welcomed an entirely new generation of Submariner. However, the 2020 Rolex Oyster Perpetual family, in its wide variety of sizes and colors, quickly became one of the most discussed, and sought after, members of the Rolex lineup.
As popular as the whole lineup was, no single model attracted as much attention, or became quite so desirable, as the 41mm Oyster Perpetual in “Tiffany” blue dial, ref. 124300. Discontinued a mere 18 months after its release, the Turquoise Blue dialed Oyster Perpetual 41 flipped the Rolex market on its head, rising from entry level darling to unattainable flagship model, often selling for multiples of its retail price.
The 41mm Oyster Perpetual was introduced to replace the 39mm model which was sold from 2015 to 2020. In a case made of 904L Oystersteel from their own in-house foundry in Plan-les-Ouates, Switzerland, and featuring all the hallmarks of a modern Rolex sports watch, the 41mm Oyster Perpetual makes a strong case for itself, whether at retail or on the secondary market.
A Rolex Oyster case and Twinlock crown ensure robust water resistance down to 100 meters. The caliber 3230 is an automatic movement from the latest family of Rolex automatics, and the power reserve of 70 hours is consistent with the improvements introduced on this family. A hacking seconds system ensures easy synchronization to a reference time, and Rolex certifies each movement as a COSC-qualified Swiss chronometer. The Parachrom Blue Breguet overcoil hairspring ensures resistance to the deleterious effects of magnetism and gravity on precision timing.
Each Oyster Perpetual 41 includes the three-link Rolex “Oyster” sports bracelet. The links are satin finished on their tops and polished on their flanks. Removable links are fixed in place by screws and permit sizing with a jeweler’s screwdriver. The Oyster clasp as used on the OP41 includes Easylink for the first time on an Oyster Perpetual. This tool-free adjustment permits up to 5mm of sizing changes. Additional sizing options can be obtained by using a strap tool to change the anchoring point of the bracelet inside of the clasp.
The original Rolex Oyster Perpetual was launched in 1933. Its name tells the story; this was a combination of the “Oyster” water resistance case and the “Perpetual” automatic rotor winding system. As the original Rolex sports watch the Oyster Perpetual spawned an entire universe of water resistant and automatic winding stainless steel Rolex sports watches. Every modern Rolex watch descends from the original rotund “bubble back” Oyster Perpetual models.
