Born in Abbeville, he built his company, Great Southern Wood Preserving, Inc., into one of the largest producers of pressure-treated lumber in the United States. The company’s flagship brand, YellaWood®, became a household name across the South, bolstered by Rane’s folksy cowboy persona featured in the brand’s advertising. Beyond business, Rane has been a significant figure in Alabama civic life, serving as a benefactor to numerous educational and charitable causes through the Jimmy Rane Foundation, which provides college scholarships to Alabama students.
Rane’s influence extends into state politics, where he is regarded as a close friend and strong supporter of Alabama Governor Kay Ivey. He has donated hundreds of thousands of dollars to her campaigns and has served in leadership roles on her inaugural committees. His name also became synonymous with motorsports when YellaWood® became the title sponsor of the fall NASCAR Cup Series playoff race at Talladega Superspeedway—the YellaWood 500.
