At Port Newark, New Jersey, Customs and Border Protection officers act on intelligence about two shipping containers. One is declared as household goods bound for West Africa, but an X-ray reveals a Range Rover and a BMW hidden inside. The other, heading for Europe, has four vehicles crammed behind mattresses and boxes, two of them hanging from chains, and an old motorcycle with its VIN plate apparently missing. With around 1 million vehicles stolen in the US every year, officers check every VIN against national databases to find out which cars were taken from American driveways.
Off Fort Lauderdale, marine agents use aerial surveillance to track suspected drug runners crossing the 50 miles of water from the Bahamas, from a nervous captain with a firearm on board to a midnight pursuit of a target that keeps vanishing from radar. In the Florida Keys, Border Patrol agents collect bricks of cocaine washed ashore by the storm surge from Hurricane Debby and patrol known smuggling hotspots in the dead of night.
